Turkish President Erdogan Wins New Term

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan won reelection as president of Turkey Saturday, defeating his rival Kemal Kilicdaroglu 52% to 48% in a runoff. Erdogan’s victory in the election preserves his 20-year rule as Turkey’s head of government, beginning his third decade in power.

Erdogan’s Justice and Development Party (AKP) also retained its control in the Turkish Parliament, winning a coalition majority with its partner Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) in the May 14 elections. Erdogan himself narrowly fell short of a majority in that election, leading to Sunday’s runoff.

Erdogan, who has strong support from the country’s working class and rural areas, has been a populist force in his two-decade tenure leading the country, often appealing to nationalist and economically populist policies and rhetoric to maintain support. In his victory speech to supporters, he made allusions to Monday’s 570th anniversary of the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople (modern day Istanbul), a pivotal date in Turkey’s history.

Russian Troops Loom on Ukrainian Border as Invasion Threat Continues

As thousands of Russian troops remain stationed threateningly close to Ukraine’s border, Western countries have tried to convince Russia to back off its threats of moving troops into the country. Russian President Vladimir Putin has counteroffered that NATO refuse any new members, a non-starter for the alliance.

NATO leaders are making trips to Kiev, Ukraine’s capital, including the prime ministers of the UK, the Netherlands, and Poland. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who himself has clashed with many Western leaders during his time in power, will also visit Kiev.

Germany, the largest economy in NATO after the US, has so far been tepid in its support of Ukraine, refraining from sending weapons while other NATO countries have done so. Germany is currently working with Russia to complete the Nord Stream 2 pipeline to transport natural gas from Russia to Germany. Some in the US government have threatened sanctions over the pipeline, though such sanctions have been opposed, most notably by President Joe Biden, over concerns such measures could weaken the relationship between the US and Germany.

Russia currently is supporting an armed rebellion in eastern Ukraine, where ethnic Russian separatists are trying to break away from the government in Kiev. Russia also controls the Crimean Peninsula, considered by most countries as still part of Ukraine.

Russia fears Ukraine falling further into the West’s orbit as popular opinion in Ukraine has turned strongly against Russia since the 2014 revolution which toppled pro-Russian president Viktor Yanukovich and prompted Russia to take over Crimea.

 

Opposition Candidate Wins Istanbul Mayoral Redo

In a sharp rebuke to Turkey’s ruling AKP party and its autocratic leader, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the residents of Istanbul voted for opposition party candidate Ekrem Imamoglu over AKP candidate Binali Yildirim. Imamoglu, of the CHP party, had won the original election held in March by a narrow margin; however, Turkey’s electoral commission, under pressure from Erdogan, voided the election. The gamble failed to pay for Erdogan, however, when voters voted for Imamoglu by a 9% margin on June 23, versus the .16% margin on March 31. Combined with defeats in other large Turkish cities, including the capital Ankara, it marks the one of the largest rebukes to Erdogan’s rule since he took power in 2003.
